Tilesets: Although I used the default tileset for ages, I've finally started to use Phoebus graphics. You can work with it (god knows I did for years) but Dwarf Therapist makes it a lot easier and doesn't change the game mechanics. It just makes configuring and launching it easier.ĭwarf Therapist: Once you're past 50 dwarves or so, the menus or so badly designed that it makes things difficult. Lazy Newb Pack: This doesn't add anything by itself. Having said that, these are the things I add on to Dwarf Fortress: I want to play games as close to the way it was intended as possible. I don't even like 'pre-order' bonuses when they give you extra equipment. I don't like adding new weapons and armour to Skyrim. I'm a person who avoids modified versions of games. However once you are bored in vanilla, and you very might well be so soon or far later, or just feel like messing around with different stuff, start fucking around with say genesis or masterwork or any of the other huge change mods, these will give you another period of learning new things, though not as confusing, and you will have lots of fun new stuff to play around with.

Mods are additions and I would say technically not part of DF then. Now this would typically getting 'the most out of DF' in terms of playing vanilla until you are very comfortable to it.

Learning how these systems work ensure that you don't have to wait on anyone else's work to play the new update as soon as possible. Because again in the future, when a new update comes out, and these 'crutches' might not be updated yet, you're going to sit there and go, 'Well, Fuck.'. Learn why you might want the conveniences before using them. DF Hack is also very helpful, but don't build on these crutches early.

I would also advise at least figuring out how to manage labors without any addons and realizing how that works at least on it's own, and then knowing WHY something like dwarf therapist is possibly needed. Once you're comfortable with this, then you can find whichever tileset you want to look at for the remainder of time. Being comfortable with ASCII can be helpful though when some more advanced mods might only support a graphics set you're not a fan of or include creatures that aren't going to have a pixel related artwork. In terms of learning ASCII vs graphics or etc, that's not as big of a deal as it's just aesthetics that all point to the same thing. This will help you a lot in the long run. Play with vanilla until you are comfortable with it, and my personal advice is, stay away from LNP and things as such, and actually figure out how to edit the colors, change tilesets, or playing around with either of the init files and what they do, so that you can tailor the game to better suit yourself, and actually know how, instead of having to depend on others to do it for you. Mods are only going to add a disgusting amount of new stuff, that mostly won't even be explained in any easy ways, and this goes beyond new creatures, also creating whole new industries and even ridiculous mechanics that greatly change how you might play the game. If you're starting out, stick with vanilla. The beauty of having a LNP is that you can choose not to have all the add-ons running, and have a 'vanilla experience' - but if you decide to get more in-depth, it's already there for you. Soundsense is also a great accompaniment, adding nice music and sound effects (makes it easier to spot important events that would otherwise be hidden amongst all the announcements). It also comes with DwarfTherapist which is a far quicker way of assigning labours to your dwarves.

Even if you download it just for that, it's worth it. While this gives access to various add-ons, you don't have to use them - but it does fix known bugs in vanilla automatically while the game is up and running. The Unofficial Updated Lazy Newb Pack (links on the sidebar) comes with dfhack. Vanilla comes with many bugs so I wouldn't like to play that on its own. But downloading one of the Lazy Newb Packs makes for easier configuration. If you've never ever played before, then you could start with vanilla - if only to cut down on the number of things you need to learn to begin with.
